On Tuesday Angus MP Mike Weir chaired a session on the floor of the House of Commons during proceedings on the Counter Terrorism and Security Bill. Two years ago Mr Weir became the first ever SNP MP to chair a Committee of the House in the main chamber of the House of Commons.
Mr Weir is a member of the chairman’s panel and has considerable experience in chairing debates in Westminster Hall and in bill committees.
Commenting Mr Weir said
“Although I have chaired many debates in Westminster Hall and in committee rooms within the House this was a rare opportunity to chair in the main Chamber.”
“It is always slightly daunting to chairing in the main chamber but was none the less a very interesting experience.”
“The only downside to chairing bills is that I cannot vote on any proceedings during the Bill’s passage through Parliament.”
