Angus MP Mike Weir met with representatives of the HALO trust to learn about their work in clearing mines in conflict zones, and was given a lesson in how to clear mines.
The Halo Trust are based in Dumfries and work around the world in removing mines from conflict zones from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Many of the zones in which they work have suffered years of conflict leaving behind a huge number of mines and other unexploded bombs that remain a serious threat to the local population.
Commenting on the event Mr Weir said
“ The Halo Trust do fantastic work around the world, much of it being done by hand. Halo have a policy of building national capacity and seeks to use its funding by deploying as many local staff as possible.
‘They employ local de miners which produces highly motivated individuals who are clearing land directly for the benefit of their relatives and friends.”
“Having had an opportunity to try out the equipment they use, luckily with dummy mines, I have the utmost respect for HALO staff and local people who undertake the work. What they do is both inspiring and frightening.”
