Angus MP Mike Weir joined MPs from across the House of Commons to meet activists from Friends of the Earth and other organisations drawing attention to the plight of our bees and the need to protect them from pesticides.
Commenting on the event Mr Weir said it was the most popular that he could remember in Westminster with the room packed and a queue out the door and down the corridor.
“At present neonicotinoids, which are harmful to bees, are banned but the UK government Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) are currently considering whether the ban should be removed or relaxed.”
“We all realise that bees are a vital part of our environment and our economy. In Europe around 75% of crops are pollinated by bees and the fall off in numbers could bring serious consequences to our fruit and vegetable production.”
“ We must not take action that would put our vital bee population at risk.”
